What Teachers say about WHAT’S UP?

Middle and high school years represent a critical time in the lives of our nation’s students. Most educators agree that high school outcomes can be greatly improved by systematically teaching and supporting students as they learn and apply the organizational and study skills necessary for successful academic work.

WHAT'S UP? has been used by more than 200 middle and high schools. Teachers using the planners commented that they experienced significant increases in homework completion and parental involvement.
Here are a few of their comments:

Higher incidence of returned assignments…Increased parent/home-school communication. We actually had parents calling teachers to check up on things when their child had not brought home his/her planner for a day or two. ELDRED, NY

Since grade eight began using these books, our students have completed their projects on time! Thank you! Thank you! BRONX, NY

Parents “loved” having this planner for their children. This helped tremendously with parent/teacher communication. It can make a difference. MORRIS, OK

The planners are keeping students from saying their usual “I didn’t know what I was supposed to do” comments. We have not heard that all semester! PASADENA, CA

I have students thanking me for providing a planner for them. This planner not only helps the student with in-school planning but after-school planning as well. It showed the students how everything is connected and without each link joining, there can be problems. One student said it has helped him go on an overnight field trip by getting all his assignments in. He told me, “It’s a miracle!” MILWAUKEE, WI

Before, less than half the assignments would come in every day. Now, over 80% of them are handed in. NEW YORK, NY

About the HELLO FRIEND / ENNIS WILLIAM COSBY FOUNDATION

The Hello Friend / Ennis William Cosby Foundation was founded in 1997 by Bill and Camille Cosby in memory of their son, Ennis. More than anything else in the world, Ennis Cosby wanted to become a teacher that would make a difference in the lives of children. WHAT’S UP? was developed to fulfill some of Ennis’ dreams by putting effective tools into the hands of teachers and parents so that all children reach their learning potential.

WHAT’S UP? was written by the Foundation’s education director, Carolyn Olivier, the Harvard educated co-author of parental guidebook “Learning to Learn” (Simon and Schuster, 1996). For more information, contact:
