1997 Newsletter Hello Friend, On behalf of the Hello Friend / Ennis William Cosby Foundation, I would like to provide you with an update of the Foundation's accomplishments and direction for the future. The Foundation has formed a dedicated and knowledgeable Board of Directors who collectively will fulfill the dreams and goals of Ennis William Cosby. Each Board member had the privilege of sharing a considerable amount of time with Ennis and feels blessed to have the opportunity to let others learn of their friend through the work of the Foundation. In May of 1997 the Foundation co-sponsored a lecture and training session at Morehouse College, Spelman College and The Howard School in Atlanta, Georgia. Carolyn Olivier, the Foundation's Educational Director and author of the book Learning to Learn, and Russell Cosby were the keynote speakers at the event. Mr. Cosby's learning difference, dyslexia, was not diagnosed until age fifty-two. Inspired by the encouragement and example of his nephew, Ennis, he is now a full time student and eloquent spokesperson. Ms. Olivier and Mr. Cosby addressed the many possibilities and challenges that face people with learning differences. In October of 1997 the Foundation co-sponsored a similar event at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Approximately one hundred and fifty professors and graduate students were in attendance. Presently, the Foundation is developing a PBS-style video and a web page. Each project is designed to raise awareness and educate the public about language-based learning differences. The Foundation has many exciting future plans and will keep you informed as they develop. Your past and continued support will enable the Foundation to continue providing much needed information about learning differences to all people. Sincerely, Phillip D. Caputo |
